Bon Appetit’s Senior Food Editor and pastry chef Claire Saffitz attempts to make a gourmet Twinkie without the hard-to-pronounce chemical ingredients. The first test is Genoise cake, a French sponge cake. For the creamy filling, Claire uses 7 minute frosting. The second test is yellow cake and buttercream filling. Next comes chiffon cake, a light cake that uses vegetable oil. Finally, with some help from Test Kitchen Manager Brad Leone, Claire decides to “Frankenstein” the recipe.

  1. why do people act like it's bad to have chemicals added to food, we're literally made up of chemicals, if you actually looked into every chemical found in the water we drink you'd probably see something close to a twinkie

  2. I was so excited to try a Twinkie after hearing about them for years on American TV… Man was I truly disappointed. They tasted like death. It has to be a matter of great marketing that's all.

  3. I just wish she wasn't wasting so much product. Like why make a mountain of twinkies and then throw them all in the garbage? And what are you doing with all the "failed" attempts?

  4. The first and only time I ate a Twinkie, I immediately gagged after taking a bite because it was so oily and, after discreetly spitting my bite into a napkin, tossed it in the garbage can… not a good experience.

  5. I like to imagine this was what the first Twinkie was like before it got the mass production makeover. All you need now is to fry it.

  6. After watching every episode of the Great British Bake Off, I cringe when she doesn't pronounce the cake as "gin•o•wheeze"

  7. I would eat those chemical twinkies more than the gourmet ones even if I'm trying not to. I don't want to get fat buuuuut… Food. :/

  8. I like this series. It's really interesting! I wish you wouldn't waste food though. I mean even though they're Twinkies, don't throw them away. Let someone eat them lol.

  9. You are a disgusting human being, I can’t believe you just threw away all those Twinkies, THERE ARE KIDS IN AFRICA!!!

  10. I tried a Twinkie once, I was surprised at how much I disliked it because I have an intense sweet tooth but it tastes so bad to me
