Gateway Ekamai

• Location: Sukhumvit road 42, Ekamai, Bangkok
• BTS: BTS Ekamai station

Gateway Ekamai mall aims to offer an alternative shopping experience from the other cookie-cutter centres across Bangkok. The mall is meant to epitomise the Japanese lifestyle that Thai people embrace readily with a mix of restaurants, clothes stores, health and beauty shops, as well as an edutainment centre, a large IT zone and a 24-hour supermarket. Whilst it probably won’t deliver for Japanophiles its ease of access via the skywalk link to BTS Ekamai and decent, affordable selection of restaurants under one roof is sure to attract visitors.
The overall experience is very pleasant. A huge Maneki-Neko (lucky cat) welcomes you as you step off the train and the building’s soft lines and terracotta colours are warm and inviting. Inside the mall is light and airy, with origami birds floating up high in its central atrium. There are also replica cherry trees, lanterns, a bamboo water fountain, girls dressed as geishas and the sound of J-pop. Although the experience might not be entirely authentic it adds to the soothing atmosphere.

Dining at Gateway Ekamai Shopping Mall
The Japanese theme can be seen throughout the selection of restaurants on offer. The ground floor offers the usual fare such as Subway, Shabushi, KFC, Swensen’s and the customary Thai food court. It is floor M that offers a wealth of Japanese alternatives including the R Burger from Tokyo, Ramen Kourakuen,

The 2nd floor is named ‘Dazzling’ and offers a selection of Beauty and Health treatments as well as a Boots and Watsons. If you are looking for a place to get your eyelashes extended or top up on Japanese herbal treatments this is where to come. The third floor is small boutiques selling children’s and women’s (Thai sizes) clothing and accessories. It was great to see some alternative items including beautiful leather bags and adorable dresses for toddlers. There are still some retail spaces to be filled and hopefully, they will continue along the same theme.

  1. Another nice one Steven and Meaw.
Here is a thought. Do a series on the different hardware stores in Thailand. Homepro(s) and the differences between them, Thai Watsadu, Ikea even. Give folks an idea on that kind of thing.

  2. Now that is a shopping centre, so big. The food court looked very big as well. Great idea taking a photo of where you park, I always do that now when I'm in Bangkok as well.
